Overcoming Death - Serving Guru
Selfless Service is one of ‘The Foundation Stone of Sikhism’. In Sikh History the hard times have been over come by selfless service. Simply because such a service is accepted at Guru’s Door and that’s why such an act is full of all the blessings Guru has to offer. And what Guru has to offer no mortal of ‘any world’ can comprehend it. Guru’s treasures are endless and infinite. Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji laid down the foundation of selfless service when He coined the term of ‘Langar – Community Kitchen’, which serves food without discriminating caste, religion, sex or age. Such grace from ‘The Greatest Guru’ has salvaged infinite living forms from hunger and thirst from suffering at hands of Messenger of Death. Those who got served in Langar by His Grace attuned to His Feet and those who served in Langar shed their ego by His Blessings. The concept of service was strengthened by Dhan Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji, Who served ‘Baba Nanak’ in each and every thought of His. And same belief of ‘Serving Guru’ led Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji to say following words:

The concept of service was strengthened by Dhan Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji, Who served ‘Baba Nanak’ in each and every thought of His. And same belief of ‘Serving Guru’ led Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji to say following words:
(I am forever a sacrifice to those who dedicate their consciousness to the Guru's Service.)
(I am forever a sacrifice to those who dedicate their consciousness to the Guru's Service.)
(O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru.)
(O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru.)
Well, Paatshahi 3 is sacrifice
to one who serves True Guru, does suggest the value of Serving Guru. Thus, we
will explore how Serving Guru and Serving Lord can save an individual
from death under divine light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
in following words clearly says that ‘servant’ does not fear death:
(How can such a servant
be afraid of death?)
This open question, what kind of
servant? One who serves the kings or emperors is away from fear of death?
Well Guruji
answers in following words:
(The Guru's servants are pleasing to our Lord and
Master. The Lord forgives them, and they no longer fear the Messenger of Death.)
(Serving the True Guru, you will
shatter the Messenger
of Death.)
As per Gurbaani, those who serve
Guru
are pleasing to God. And thus God blesses them with fearlessness
against death. Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji are further enforcing the belief and thoughts of Serving
Guru to escape death in following words:
(For those who serve their Guru, there is no punishment at the hands of the Messenger of Death.)
(Let's serve the Perfect True Guru, O my dear beloveds, and clear
away the Path of
Death.)
(Serving the Guru, one is released
from the Messenger
of Death.)
(Serving the True Guru, one finds a lasting peace;
the pains of birth and death are removed.)
(O Nanak, without serving the True Guru, they are bound and beaten
in the City of
Death; they arise and depart with blackened faces.)
(Serving the Guru, peace is produced, and then, one
does not suffer in pain. The cycle of birth and death is brought to an end, and death
has no power over at all.)
(Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are
true. He snaps the noose of death from around their necks.)
(Serving the True Guru, the mortal's
subservience to Death
is ended.)
Serving Guru
should be done the way Dhan Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji, Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Ram Das Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji have done. It was selfless without asking
anything in return. Such services, selfless, result in making an individual humble.
Humbleness leads to truth, truth defeats death and eventually peace is
obtained. Next we will cover what happens when an individual Serves Lord under Divine
Light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
