Overcoming Death - Being Devotee
‘Gurmukh’ is a Devotee who serves his Guru with all devotion. To understand devotion it is important to know what key aspects of an individual are. An individual is made of breaths and if he utters ‘Guru Shabad’ he can be a devotee. An individual posses thoughts and if every thought of his is associated with Guru then he can be a devotee. An individual is made of five sins and if he surrenders them to Guru then he can be a devotee. An individual is impacted by time and if every moment is dedicated to Guru then he can be a devotee. All the surrender, chanting, dedication seems to be perfect ingredients of a devotee but Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says he alone is devotee who is pleasing to True Lord in following words:
Who is pleasing to HIM has to be fortunate, as described by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words, as there are infinite life forms and still he is the chosen one:
Thus Guruji longs for HIS loving devotion in following words:

सेई भगत जि साचे भाणे ॥जमकाल ते भए निकाणे ॥३॥
(They alone are devotees,
who are pleasing to the True Lord. They are freed from the Messenger of Death.)
In above words, Guruji has ensured that
no way ego enters into an individual who is in path of becoming devotee. Like,
an individual may think he is chanting Naam, he has surrendered, so he is
devotee and eventually latent ego will enter in him. All the good work will
go in vain. That’s why Guruji has left everything on True
Lord, that is not efforts of an individual but HE chooses who is
pleasing to HIM and such individual becomes the devotee. And such devotee
attains liberation and Messenger of Death cannot approach them as per following
words by Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji:
भगता नो जमु जोहि न साकै कालु न नेड़ै जाई ॥
(The Messenger of Death cannot touch Your
devotees;
death cannot even approach them.)
Guruji
further tells us that Devotees are delars of Naam.
And one who is being attached to Naam how death can approach him as
per following words of Paatshahi 3:
हरि के नाम के वापारी हरि भगत हहि जमु जागाती तिना नेड़ि न जाहु ॥
(The Lord's devotees are dealers in the Name of
the Lord. The Messenger
of Death, the tax-collector, does not even approach them.)
Who is pleasing to HIM has to be fortunate, as described by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words, as there are infinite life forms and still he is the chosen one:
भगवंत भगत कउ भउ किछु नाही आदरु देवत जाम ॥१॥
(The Lord's devotee is very fortunate; he has
absolutely no fear. Even the Messenger of Death pays homage to him.)
Thus Guruji longs for HIS loving devotion in following words:
भाउ भगति गोविंद बांछत जमु न साकै जोहि जीउ ॥
(I long for loving devotion to the Lord of the
Universe, and so the Messenger of Death cannot even see me.)
Devotion eliminates the gap, brings Soul
and Supreme
near to each other. And Soul becomes HIS, merge into HIM
and such individual becomes HIS people and such death cannot
strike such people as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
हरि के लोग नही जमु मारै ॥
(Death cannot strike down the people of the Lord.)
