Overcoming Death - Meeting The Lord/The True Guru:
Meeting Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is Lord’s Will and we have already discovered what happens when someone meets ‘Satguru – The True Guru’. We will try discovering more in light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in this section. As per Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words, meeting the True Guru and Lord an individual is saved from cycles of Birth and Death and does not suffer the pains of same:

Overcoming Death - Meeting The Lord/The True Guru:

As per Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words, meeting the True Guru and Lord an individual is saved from cycles of Birth and Death and does not suffer the pains of same:
सतिगुरि मिलिऐ फेरु न पवै जनम मरण दुखु जाइ ॥
(Meeting with the True Guru, you shall not have to
go through the cycle of reincarnation again; the pains of birth and death will be taken away.)
गुरु पूरा जिसु भेटीऐ मरि जनमि न रोवै ॥
(One who meets the Perfect Guru, shall not have to suffer
through birth
and death.)
Meeting ‘The True Guru’ not only
eradicates pain of suffering but balances the mind to an extent that it is not
affected by any emotions. Emotions which give feeling of pain, suffering, joys
and pleasure feel same to the conscious when True Guru is met as said
by Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words:
हरख सोग हानि मिरतु दूख सुख चिति समसरि गुर मिले ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
(Joy and sorrow, profit and loss, birth
and death,
pain and pleasure - they are all the same to my consciousness, since I met the
Guru.)
And what is the impact of balanced mind,
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes in following words:
इहु मनु छूटै जां सतिगुरु भेटै ॥जमकाल की फिरि आवै न फेटै ॥३॥
(This mind is released, only when
it meets with
the True Guru. Then, it does not suffer beatings by the Messenger of Death.)
Balanced mind is released from all the
doubts, conflicts and duality. And once mind rises above such limitations and
individual is bound to over come Death. And once Death is over come an
individual never be beaten by Messenger of Death. Dhan
Shri Guru Raam Das Ji gives further insight of state of mind when an
individual meets the True Guru in following words:
जीवणि मरणि सुखु होइ जिन्हा गुरु पाइआ ॥
(Those who have found
the Guru
are at peace,
in life and in death.)
Once an individual realizes that Death
has been overcome nothing scares him. He achieves peace of mind in life since
his biggest worry has been conquered. And of course same is valid during his
last moments of physical manifestation. How an individual gets to meet The
True Guru? Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji
say that by Good Fortune one meets The True Guru and then True
Guru ensures that individual escapes Death in following words:
साजन सैण मिलहु संजोगी गुर मिलि खोले फासे ॥२॥
(Through good fortune, we meet such friends and relatives,
who meet with
the Guru, and escape the noose of Death.)
वडभागी सतिगुरु पाइआ ॥जिनि जम का पंथु मिटाइआ ॥
(By great good fortune, I found the True Guru, Who obliterated
the path of the Messenger
of Death.)
If True Guru is found or met an
individual needs to ensure that he unites with Him. Why? In union with True
Guru sufferings of Death end and He keeps individual in
union with Him Self no matter what as told by Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
in following words:
नानक सतिगुर मिलै मिलाइआ दूख पराछत काल नसे ॥४॥१६॥
(O Nanak, united in union with the True Guru,
suffering, sin and death run away.)
सतिगुरि मेली मिलि रही जनम मरण दुखु निवारि ॥३६॥
(United by the True Guru, you shall remain united,
and the pains of birth and death will be ended.)
Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
further tell us that meeting The True Guru, helps an individual
is shown the way to die which bring joy deep within in following words:
सतिगुरु मिलै सु मरणु दिखाए ॥ मरण रहण रसु अंतरि भाए ॥
(Meeting the True Guru, we are shown the way to die. Remaining
alive in this death brings joy deep within.)
This is really amazing since Death
brings joy. Please remember once Ego of an individual dies the door to
salvation opens, an individual meets with The Lord. And only Perfect
– True Guru can unite an individual to The Lord as per following
words by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji:
गुरि पूरै मेलाइआ जनम मरण दुखु जाइ ॥
(The Perfect Guru has united me
with Him,
and the pains of birth and death have departed.)
Once Lord is met, pains of Death
are eradicated as said by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in
following words:
जनम मरन दुखु कटिआ हरि भेटिआ पुरखु सुजाणु ॥
(The pains of birth and death are eradicated, upon meeting the All-knowing Lord, the Primal Being.)
जनम मरण दुखु कटीऐ पिआरे जब भेटै हरि राइ ॥१॥
(The pains of birth and death
are removed, O Beloved, when the mortal meets with the Lord, the King.)
Meeting the Lord is about knowing
Him, realizing Him, finding Him and living in His conscious.
And this all leads an individual away from Death, end of his sufferings as said
by Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Raam Das Ji in following words:
कालै कवलु निरंजनु जाणै ॥
(One who knows the Immaculate Lord chews up death.)
पीरु पछाणै भिसती सोई अजराईलु न दोज ठरा ॥११॥
(One who realizes the Prophet attains heaven. Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death,
does not cast him into hell.)
जिसु तू आवहि चिति तिसु जम नाहि दुख ॥
(One who is conscious of You does not suffer at
the hands of the Messenger of Death.)
जनम मरण दुख खिन महि बिनसे हरि पाइआ प्रभु अबिनासी ॥
(The pains of birth and death vanish
in an instant, and the Eternal, Imperishable Lord God is
found.)
So, meeting The
True Guru brings peace of mind and fear of Death is taken away. But
just meeting does not help, one has to spend efforts to unite him self with Him.
Else meeting is just an action with no involvement. And without involvement an
individual can be elevated to a level of knowing, realizing or living in the
conscious of The Lord. Next we will discover how an individual needs to get
involved to end his suffering of Death in light of The
True Guru Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
