So far we have learnt, by grace of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, that ‘Death and Its Messengers’ are merciless; but there is more to ‘Death’s’ Nature. It does give physical and mental pain to ‘false beings’ as per ‘Gurbaani’. So before we get into what is false and true in light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, it is important to understand what else ‘Death’ does other than humiliation? What ‘Death’ does that mortals are scar of it? This will help to understand ‘Death’, though mortals like us are limited with comprehension but every one does understand the pain. Once the pain is understood only then journey begins to find the nature of pain, causes of pain and eventually a search to overcome the pain.

Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says following:

(Death gives so much pain to others.)
Death’ causes ‘Separation - Vichora’ of and from near and dear ones. And separation results in pain. As per ‘Gurbaani’ separation is felt by those who are engrossed in ‘Duality’. They have attached themselves to ‘Other’ not to ‘The One’. Those who are attuned to ‘The One’ acknowledge ‘Death’ as ‘HIS Will’. Such emotional attachement becomes the reason of immense pain when so called near or dear one dies. Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji gives insight into cause if such pain in following words:

(The path of Death is very arduous and painful; it is stained with the darkness of emotional attachment.)
(The people of the world do not like death; they try to hide from it. They are afraid that the Messenger of Death may catch them and take them away.)

Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji further says following:
(The path of death is dark and dismal; the way cannot be seen.)
(How can the impassible world-ocean be crossed? The fear of the Messenger of Death is deadly. The path of Death is agonizingly painful.)
Gurbaani’ has been firm on declaring ‘Death’ causing pshychological trauma. The basic mistake mortals seem to be doing is to ignore ‘The End’. They wrongly belive ‘Death’ cannot touch them. And what happens, indulgence in ‘futile’ action, just wasting precious human life and breath in dismal way. Well such activities can elude an individual to believe, that’s why called them delusional, that he has incapacitated the fear of death. But in fact fear never vanishes leading to further indulgence in such activities and resulting in addition of more and more filth. Infact his desires never end, even when ‘Death’ is knocking at his door, as said by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji in following words:

(He shall have to leave it in the end, and yet his desire is still not satisfied.)
(their desires are never satisfied, and they depart grieving in the end.)
The question, that comes to mind why desires don’t die? Dhan Shri Guru Nana Dev Ji answers in following words:

(When someone dies, the five passions meet and mourn his death.)
Death’ of an individual does not mean that passions will end. They will continue to exist. And that explains desires don’t end. Passions can only be overcome by ‘Meditating on The Naam – The One’. All the pains we hae looked so far are related to pshychology. Now we look at what ‘Death’ does to physical. As per Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji:

(She wrings her hands, her body writhes in pain, and she turns from black to white)

Last Moment’ body is striving hard for air but since ‘Death’ is cutting supply of oxygen body reacts. Hand begins to twist and body shivers, a struggle by tissues to stay alive. Lack of oxygen makes the body to turn ‘pale’. ‘Death’ strangles an individual and what happens next is told by Dhan Shri Guru Teg Bhadur Ji in following words:

(When Death places the noose around my neck, then I lose all my senses.)

An individual looses control on the senses, the very senses he has lived to gratify himself. ‘Death’ gives him that realization. It gives him a glimpse of what is truth and what is not. Dhan Shri Guru Teg Bhadur Ji describes it in following words:

(When Death's club falls on my head, then I will be wakened from my sleep.)

Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji says in following words that what ever he does in life they eventually realizes it.

(And when death comes, they suffer in agony; they must eat what they have planted.)
Can it be called awakening? That is just for a moment; it is just a realization of the actions being done throughout the life. Well, that is more like showing mirror to an individual. What ever he has done was under delusion. He was under ‘sleep of ignorance’. Actual awakening happens when he dies in ‘The Naam’. If he has not practiced ‘Meditating on The Naam’, then he will not be able to do so when the end comes as per Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji words above and as said by Kabeer Ji in following words:

(When the end comes, you will not be able to vibrate and meditate on Him.)
And when breathes stops, what happens? Every one knows that. As per Kabeer Ji and Ravidaas Ji:
(But in the end, the pitcher of the body bursts.)
(In the end, your own soul shall have to answer for its account.)
(But in the end, that body will be burned with the firewood.)
(But in the end, three and a half cubits will be your measured space.)
(But in the end, this body shall be reduced to a pile of ashes.)
So, ‘Death’ is pain, ends the physical manifestation, and does not kill desire. What does it all mean? It suggests ‘Death’ is just to an end to physical not to passions, which drives the physical. Hence it is not all powerful. There has to be ‘Someone’ or ‘Something’ more powerful than it. So, next we will look at ‘Who’ drives ‘Death’ which scares every mortal in light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
