Passions/Sins:

What is passion, an urge, craving, desire? Passion signifies obsessive indulgence of an individual to his emotions. These emotions can become so intense that an individual fail to comprehend what is right and what is wrong under their influence. What matters to him is fulfillment of his emotions, no matter what he has to do to gratify or satiate him self. He may become ego, lust, rage, greed and worldly attachment. And his passions become negative. That’s the reason Gurbaani has discouraged behavior under the influence of passions – Ego, Anger, Lust, Attachment and Greed. These passions are also referred as ‘Sins’ and any association with them is considered evil. And what happens to them who make association with evil is described by Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in following words:
(Death is over their ears, when they hear talk of evil.)
What does it mean by talking and hearing evil? Two individuals connect to each other via combination of talking and hearing. That is one speaks and other listens at one moment. If both speaks together it is not conversation, it is argument and in an argument the purpose is satisfy ego and they make association with evil. In a discussion language and words are used. If words are meant to slandering and just self-appreciation, and they feel good, it simply means ego is playing its role. Also, what is the purpose of such arguments or debates? The very reason is to establish supremacy over others and to boast about one’s cleverness and knowledge. But Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says such cleverness never liberate an individual from fear of Death in following words:
(Even with great cleverness, the fear of death clings to you.)
Evil is poison. Like poison kills physical body similarly evil kills the mind that is it paralyzes the mind to an extent of making correct decision. Any individual under influence of such poison can never be free of doubts and will end up in searching for more poison and eventually ‘Death’ will tear him apart as said by Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji in following words:
(With poison within, he pretends to be free of doubt; he is ruined and humiliated by the Messenger of Death.)
(Imbued with poison, they search out poison, and suffer the pains of death and rebirth.)
Next we will see various manifestations of ego and its consequences in divine light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

EGO:

How an egoistic person is recognized? He will just talk about himself. He will only want to hear about himself. That’s what Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes in the following words:
(You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.)
Egoistic person can go to any limits to prove his point. For him what matters is his appreciation no matter how it comes. Like Guruji has said above, egoistic individual will beat drums i.e. he will just indulge in advertising himself thinking he can claim or has established his authority over the world. But still he cannot escape the ‘Death’ since he is driven by ego. Guruji further says following:
(Asserting their authority, they eat, and beholding their mansions, they forget about death.)
Once an egoistic individual thinks his authority has been established that is every entity follows his command, a wrong perception leading to illusions rising from ego, they are drowned in pleasures of life. They feel happy enjoying good food in big mansions. Well, their ego makes them to forget that ‘Death’ is not far behind. An individual deluded by his ego ends up as ‘Faithless Cynic’. How an individual can have faith for whom very own comprehension is the only ‘Truth’? His world is as big as and as small as his ego. He cannot go beyond his own image. And it is quite evident, how such individual can be ‘Faith Bearer’? One needs to understand having own comprehension is not wrong, since that is experience. But considering that only own comprehension is correct and nothing else is ego. That’s the reason Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, The Guru with The Great Vision saved His Sikh from becoming victim of ego when He decided to compile experiences of ‘Other Great’ in Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He ensured that His Sikh does not negate the experiences of other’s, who have achieved ‘Great Spiritual Peaks’ in sheer ego. Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji! Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji! An individual without faith is driven by pessimism. Where will he find hope, as he has shut down all the doors of hope by choosing the path of faithless? And without hope what kind of behavior he will indulge? Well, every action of his will be just ego. And such ‘Faithless Cynics’ are hunted, chased, tortured by Death as said by Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in following words:
(The vicious hunters, the faithless cynics, are hunted down by the Messenger of Death.)
(The Faithless Cynics shall all remain hungry; the brutal Messenger of Death stands waiting at their door.)
(NGANGA: Death seizes those whom God has made into faithless cynics.)
(They have wasted away their whole lives in vain; those faithless cynics die a regretful death.)
(O Nanak, the faithless cynics are bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death, and suffer agony in hell.)
(The faithless cynic is not rid of his fear of death.)
(The faithless cynic has no place of rest in the Lord's palace; he suffers the pains of birth and death.)
So a faithless cynic no matter how much power of world he holds, no matter how much venom his spits, no matter how much he tries to establish his regime, no matter what ever he speaks, he will remain ‘spiritually hungry’ and will eventually fall. He cannot overcome the ‘Fear of Death’. He will never find place in ‘Lord’s Mansion’ and Death will drag him, torture him and will add miseries to his plight. It raises a question, what is the spread of egotism i.e. who all are suffering from it. Well, Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji says that not only few or countable are victim of ego in fact whole world is affected by ego in following words:
(The entire world is afflicted by the disease of egotism. They suffer the terrible pains of birth and death.)
Guruji confirms that ego is present in every individual and further Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says egotism is the very soul of sin in following words:
(O egotism, you are the root of birth and death and the cycle of reincarnation; you are the very soul of sin.)
So what happens to individuals having ego? Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes in following words:
(In the flames of egotism, he is burnt to death; he wanders in doubt and the love of duality.)
(Those who go around acting in egotism are struck down by the Messenger of Death with his club.)
(I am stuck in the filth of doubt and egotistical actions, and I try not to think of death.)
(They cannot escape birth and death, and with egotism within them, they suffer in misery.)
(One whose mind is afflicted by the disease of egotism, cries out in birth and death.)
(They burn to death in egotism, like the moth lured by seeing the flame.)
(Entangled in conflict, pleasure and egotism, he does not even think of death.)
(They are stricken with the great disease of egotism; they are hit on the head by the Messenger of Death.)
(Through egotism, they suffer the pains of birth and death.)
In ego he wanders in doubt since he does not believe that ego is all false. This gives rise to doubts and conflicts. Ego has such influence on an individual mind; he believes that he will never die. What kind of delusion is this, which makes an individual to disregard the only inevitable event on physical manifestation, The Death? No matter what an egoistic individual believes or do he cannot escape Death. That’s why Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji asks mortals to give up ego else Death is very near in following words:
(Give up your pride and stubborn self-conceit; death, yes, death, is always close and near at hand.)
