Overcoming Death - Guru's Teaching and Wisdom
For a Sikh all the wisdom comes from Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and he looks for teaching inBefore we begin this section, please keep in mind who truely believes in Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and those who are referred as and call them selves as Sikhs, for them only Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is The Guru and he follows only His Teachings.
Hymns of Guru are Guru’s Teachings; since what ever Guru will utter will have some learning for follower. Since it is not easy to accept self’s shortcomings but to hold others responsible for it is relatively simple. So, if Words of Guru cannot be understood by an individual then fault lies at individual. Please remember no matter what Guru will only speak if it is important and what ever He will speak will have some teachings in it. If we cannot decode it don’t raise any questions or doubts just have patience and the deeper meanings will be revealed by His Grace. So listen to Guru’s Teachings so cut away the noose away of Death as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji:
So here is question,
how many so called Modern Guru’s have
walked on path shown by The True Guru? How many of them have
followed the Teaching’s of True Guru? How many are practicing
what they preach? How many are sharing their experience? The answer to all
questions is ‘none’. I just don’t want to implant this thought since every
one of us is responsible citizen of this planet. Please introspect else you
will loose this life to listen and follow the Teaching’s of The True Guru Dhan
Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Next, we will find out, how Naam
can be found and how an individual can overcome Death in in Saad

Overcoming Death - Guru's Teaching and Wisdom
For a Sikh all the wisdom comes from Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and he looks for teaching inBefore we begin this section, please keep in mind who truely believes in Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and those who are referred as and call them selves as Sikhs, for them only Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is The Guru and he follows only His Teachings.
Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji
and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji bless us with Their experience
regarding Guru’s Teachings in following words:
गुरमती जमु जोहि न साकै साचै नामि समाइआ ॥
(Following the Guru's Teachings, I cannot be
touched by the Messenger
of Death. I am absorbed in the True Name.)
(Birth and death are ended for me, by the Word of the Guru's
Teachings; I shall no longer pass through the door of pain and
suffering.)
As per Guruji, Guru’s
Teaching helps an individual to attach to ‘Naam’ and he does not
pass through doors of sufferings. And in previous section Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
has already bestowed grace on us to understand the impact of ‘Naam’
on Death. This clearly means ‘Naam Daan – Gift of Naam’ which we
obtain of Guru can only result in salvation. That’s the reason in ‘Daily
Ardas – Prayer’ it is said that Sikh is bestowed with ‘Naam
Daan’ and who is Sikh has already been mentioned
above. Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji
say following:
(Chant and repeat the Naam; through
the Guru's
Teachings praise the Lord, and slay the horrible serpent of the Messenger of Death.)
(Through the Guru's spiritual wisdom, we sing the
Kirtan of the Praises
of the Lord of the Universe, and the
noose of death
is cut away.)
This is very important to understand.
How much a mortal knows about ‘The One’? So if a mortal just say
few words in Glory of Lord it will be originated from his mind, his thought.
And they will either be incomplete or will have ego behind it. Hence, singing
such glory will result in nothing. But if Words of Guru composed of
Teachings and Wisdom of Guru are used to praise The Lord then it will be
completely different story. Why? Because Those Words are backed by experience
and The
Grace of Guru! They will have depth and not lack the credibility. Guru
Ji further says following:
(I follow the Guru's Teachings, and so the
Messenger of Death
cannot even see me; I am immersed in the True Name.)
Guru’s Teaching
hide individual from Death and eventually helps him in to
submerge in ‘Naam’. And Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is
trying to reinforce same thought in mortals in following words that with
meditating on Naam it is important to follow Guru’s Teachings to
overcome death:
(Meditating on the Naam, he shall
find peace; following the Guru's Teachings, he shall not be seized by death.)
Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji
and Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji following words reveal a new understanding about
Death:
(You hold in your hands the sword of the Guru's spiritual wisdom; with this
destroyer of death, kill the Messenger of Death.)
(The Messenger of Death
does not draw near those who live the Guru's Teachings; they never return defeated.)
Above ‘Gur Shabads’ clearly
suggests, that every living being is fighting war with Death to stay alive.
Living being will eventually loose it. Living being can win the war if he has
proper weapons to fight the war. And Guru’s Wisdom and Teachings provides
such sword that even Death can be slayed. But mortals
prefer to use their own thinking called ‘Manmat’ to fight the war and result
is defeat and brutal thrashing by Death. That’s why Kabir
Ji is asking mortals to fight Death through Guru’s Teachings in following
words to crush the it:
गुर उपदेसि काल सिउ जुरै ॥
(And through the Guru's Teachings,
fights
with death.)
Guru’s Teachings
make an individual to surrender and humble, accepting oneself as slave is sign
of both surrender and humblness, as per the following words of Dhan
Shri Guru Raam Das Ji:
(Death does not even approach those
who follow the Guru's
Teachings, and become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.)
The question is who is slave of Lord?
Well, ‘The Guru’ is slave of ‘The God’. There are many references
where Gur Shabads uttered by Guru Maharaj clearly suggest that They
considered Themseleves slave of the Lord. And become of slave of such
slave means, an opportunity to serve The Guru. Such an individual will be
boiund to be humble else he will never get an opportunity to sever The
Guru.
Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
says following:
(One whose heart is filled with the
Hymns
of the True Guru,
obtains the Pure
Lord. He is not under the power of the Messenger of Death,
nor does he owe Death
anything.)
जम की कटीऐ तेरी फास ॥गुर का उपदेसु सुनीजै ॥
(And the noose of the Messenger of Death
will be cut away. So listen to the Guru's Teachings.)
The importance of listening in Sikhism
is already discussed in previous section on ‘Gur Shabad’. Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji
further gives insight related to following Guru’s Teaching in following words:
भउ जनम मरन निवारि ठाकुर हरि गुरमती प्रभु पाइआ ॥३॥
(Our Lord and Master takes away the
fear of birth and death; following the Guru's Teachings, the Lord God is
found.)
Guru’s Teachings
help an individual to meet The True Lord. And once Lord is found how Death can
trouble an individual? Well who knows better than Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji, Who
Himself walked on path shown by The True Guru, Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji,
and thus asking everyone to follow Guru’s Teachings in following words:
गुर बचनि मारगि जो पंथि चाले तिन जमु जागाती नेड़ि न आइआ ॥
(The Messenger of Death
does not even approach those who have walked on the path, and followed the Guru's Teachings.)
