Overcoming Death - Being Gurmukh
Who is ‘Gurmukh’? The literal meaning is Gurmukh is one who has ‘Face towards Guru’. It simply means Gurumukh listens to his Guru. Well, Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji has described the greatness of listening in Japji Sahib and one find moment listening to Guru makes an individual beloved of Guru. He becomes such part of Guru that even Guru cannot stop Himself to meet him. When Paatshahi 2 asked Paatshahi 3 to settle in Goindwal, Paatshahi 3 only agreed to since it was Guru’s Will and never to come to Khadur till He is asked to do same. Paatshahi 3 never wanted to leave Khadur, how a soul fully drenched in Guru’s emotions can even think of living away from Guru? But emotions and relationship between Guru and His Sikh made Paatshahi 2 to travel on foot form Khadur to Goindwal just to bless Paatshahi 3 with ‘His Darshan – Vision’.

Well, it is common human behavior that
an individual will tend to be more attentive to the one he faces. Gurbaani
has blessed Gurmukhs with every possible treasures of the universe. In
context of this work, we will find out how Gurumukh overcomes Death
under divine light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
As per Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji
and Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in following words tells every one that Gurmukh
meets The Lord as they remained absorbed in HIM and thus become inspiration
for every one to meet HIM, they don’t die and Messenger of
Death does not approach them:
गुरमुखि मिलै मिलाए आपे ॥ कालु न जोहै दुखु न संतापे ॥
(The Gurmukhs meet the Lord, and inspire others to meet
Him as well. Death
does not see them, and pain does not afflict them.)
(The Gurmukhs do not die; they are not consumed by death.
The Gurmukhs
are absorbed in the True Lord.)
(The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.)
(The Messenger of Death does
not even approach the beloved Sikhs of the Guru.)
(The Gurmukh is not afflicted by pain. The
Messenger of
Death does not come near him.)
Gurumukh meditates on Naam and escape death
as per following words of Paatshahi 3:
जनम मरण निहचलु भए गुरमुखि नामु धिआइ ॥
(They escape the cycle of birth and
death,
and, as Gurmukh,
they meditate on the Naam)
Sitting in meditation mind wanders in
all directions. Practitioners say thoughts keep coming. So, one has to control
thoughts in deep silence. But Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Japji
Sahib has clearly said that even sitting in silence does not guarantee
finding Lord. As the world is living in duality and need is to focus on
One
Formless Lord. And that’s why Gurumukh spends his efforts in
understanding One Lord, enshrines HIS Love, find self and overcome
cycles of birth and death as said by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in
following words:
(The Gurmukhs understand the One Lord,
and enshrine love for Him. They dwell in the home of their own inner beings,
and merge in the True Lord. The cycle of birth and death is ended.)
Understanding is followed by knowing.
And once Gurumukh knows The Lord he manages to eradicate ego
and self conceit, this ensures that Death serves him and stay away from
him as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji:
विचहु आपु गवाए फिरि कालु न खाए गुरमुखि एको जाता ॥
(Eradicating her ego from within herself, death
shall not consume her again; as Gurmukh, she knows the One Lord God.)
(The Gurmukh eliminates self-conceit from
within himself; he shall not be punished by the Messenger of Death.)
Knowing The Lord, Lord
abides in mind and heart of Gurmukh, Gurmukh worship in
adoration, Gurmukh enshrines Lord in heart and when death
encounters such Gurmukh as per following words of Paatshahi 1, Paatshahi
3 and Paatshahi 4 it serves the Gurmukh, it does not give pains to Gurmukh,
it is scared of Gurmukh:
नानक गुरमुखि जमु सेवा करे जिन मनि सचा होइ ॥१॥
(O Nanak, Death serves the Gurmukhs; the True Lord abides in
their minds.)
(What can the wretched, terrified Messenger of Death
do to the Gurmukhs?
The Lord abides in their hearts.)
(The Messenger of Death does not even approach that
mortal who, as Gurmukh,
enshrines the Lord within his heart.)
(Those Gurmukhs who worship the Lord in adoration end
their subservience to the Messenger of Death, and to the world.)
(The Messenger of Death does not even approach that
mortal who, as Gurmukh,
enshrines the Lord within his heart.)
(The Gurmukhs are lovingly attached to
the Lord, Har, Har, Har. Their pains of both birth and death are taken away.)
Being absorbed in Lord, Gurmukh
just contemplate on reality, The One. And he gets the
understanding there is no other relation than Guru in the world. Only Guru
can be his savior and he builds the bond with Guru. Gurmukh
becomes affectionate with Guru, become His Beloved and True
Guru blesses him cuts his bonds and free him from Death as he is endorsed
by Guru,
as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji:
(The True Guru snaps the noose of Death,
for that Gurmukh
who contemplates the essence of reality.)
(The Gurmukhs are approved in death as
in life, while the self-willed manmukhs continue the cycle of birth and death.)
And Guru on his side, he can win any
battle and war the world or beyond has to offer him. With Guru on his side his
transactions in form actions and words are all backed by Guru’s Grace. And thus he
conquers death as per following words of Paatshahi 1:
गुरमुखि जगु जीता जमकालु मारि बिदारि ॥
(The Gurmukh conquers the world; he knocks down the Messenger of Death,
and kills it.)
(The trades of the Gurmukh
are pleasing to God. His stock is safe, and his capital is safe and sound. The
noose of Death
is cut away from around his neck.)
And from such state emerges bliss and
contentment. Every moment is joyful. Why? Since Gurmukh has met the‘The
Lord’ so how death can trouble or cause pains to him? In such ecstasy his
life becomes celebration and he as further said by Paatshahi 3 in following
words:
(The Gurmukhs are celebrated in
life and death.)
So, an individual should become Gurmukh
or become friend with Gumukh as per following words of Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji:
(Make friends with the Gurmukhs,
and focus your consciousness on the True Guru. The root of birth and death
will be cut away, and then, you shall find peace, O friend.)
Only being friend with Gurmukh
can save an individual. Only he can help an individual to focus consciousness
on True
Guru, Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
