Overcoming Death - Serving Lord
Human birth is an opportunity blessed by ‘The One – The Formless’ to merge with him. And what is better than ‘Serving Lord’. As per Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji in following words ‘Servants of Lord’ are absorbed in Naam overcomes the pain of birth and death:
(The humble servants of the Lord are absorbed in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. The pain of birth and the fear of death are eradicated.)
Guruji is surely asking everyone to Serve Lord and to serve with humbleness. Services have to be performed with devotion and love. Both devotion and love is the path to Lord. What good are the services done without emotions and involvement? Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji describes what an individual achieves by Serving Lord in loving and devotional manner in following words:
(The fear of death and rebirth is removed by performing loving devotional service to the Lord of the World.)
(One who serves at the Door of the Imperceptible and Unfathomable Lord, obtains this eternal position. There is no birth or death there, no coming or going; anguish and anxiety are ended.)
Such services are real and true. And services which are true and real are being blessed by Dhan Shri Guru Raam Daas Ji in following words:
(Those who truly serve their True Lord and Master overwhelm and conquer Death, the torturer.)
Death is considered as long sleep where soul takes rest and prepares for next life. But one who is awakened how Death can put him to sleep. Such a state can be achieved by Serving Lord as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
(The Messenger of Death cannot touch him with pain; The Lord's humble servant remains awake to the Love of the Naam.)
But why Lord saves HIS Sevants? Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji answers in following words:
(The Lord's servants are very dear to the Lord; they chant the Word of the Lord's Baani. The account of the recording angels, Chitr and Gupt, and the account with the Messenger of Death is totally erased.)
Well, it is quite evident from above ‘Gur Shabad’ that Lord Servants are dear to Lord. Because if this relationship they chant ‘Lord’s Baani – Words of Lord’. And we have already seen earlier Greatness of Naam under Divine Light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji blesses with His experience of Serving Lord in following words:
(Whatever I ask for, I receive; I serve at the Lord's feet, the source of nectar. I am released from the bondage of birth and death, and so I cross over the terrifying world-ocean.)
(When I serve Him, the Messenger of Death is chased away.)
Serving Lord fulfills every desire of an individual. And once an individual is full, how death can scratch him? How death can trouble him? If he is not troubled by death what kind of sorrows or pains he can feel? Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji comforts us in following words:
(Disease, sorrow, pain, old age and death do not even approach the humble servant of the Lord.)
(Your servant is not afraid of anything; the Messenger of Death cannot even approach him.)
(The Lord's servant does not suffer pain from the Messenger of Death.)
One can comprehend that all diseases will be overcome, sorrows will be evaporated, pain will not be felt and Death won’t trouble while serving; but what about old age? Will an individual defy the rule of nature, if he serves God? And similar questions can arise. Well, no one can change the cycle of nature. ‘Samrath Guru – All Capable Guru’ can do it but He will not do it since it will be against the ‘The Will’ of ‘The One’, against the rules which HE has laid down to run and manage the cosmos. So what does it mean? The old age is associated with lack of energy and Serving Lord ensures an individual remains effervescent. Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji led by example, by performing unstoppable services for Dhan Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji. At the age of 60+ it is not easy for an individual to walk down few miles, carry load irrespective of time and weather. He showed to world, generations that age can never be an excuse for not Serving Guru and Lord. And in His words below, such an opportunity, Serving Lord, comes by destiny, it liberates an individual and help him to overcome death even when whole world is in grasp of Maya:
(In the midst of Maya, the Lord's servant is emancipated. O Nanak, one who has such destiny inscribed upon his forehead, conquers and destroys death.)
Further, as per following words of Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
(The Messenger of Death and the Righteous Judge of Dharma do not even approach the beloved servant of My Lord and Master.)
(The Messenger of Death does not even approach the humble servant of the Lord.)
(Doing so, the Messenger of Death, the evil enemy, is killed. Death does not even approach the Lord's servant.)
(When you serve the Lord, Death cannot even see you. It comes and falls at the feet of those who know the Lord.)
Death is feeble in front of those who Serves Lord. Even Righteous Judge of Dharma, who does not let any mortal escape from his deeds, cannot reach one who Serves Lord. No matter how much evil death is; how much arrogant death is; Guruji confirms death will just be humbled and bow down at one who Serves Lord. And that’s why Paatshahi 1 emphasizing that any individual Serving Lord will achieve immortality in following words:
(Whoever serves Him becomes immortal and imperishable, and will not be tortured by death.)
This all explains why ‘Serving’ forms the basis of Sikhism. Serve with humbleness, loving devotion and make it a true action and Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji guarantees salvation and liberation.
