Being A ‘Manmukh’: Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes ‘Manmukh’ in following
words:
(The
filth of the self-willed
manmukhs is not washed off; they have no love for the Guru's Shabad.)
He
listens to his mind, goes as per his own will and does not listen to his Guru
Shabads.
Gurbaani
describe many symptoms of ‘Manmukh’. But since the discussion
in this work is restricted to ‘False Actions’ responsible for ‘Death’
we will restrict ourselves to above description of ‘Manmukh’.
Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das
Ji says following:
(The
self-willed
manmukhs, in love with duality, are led onto the path of Death.)
It is evident
that ‘Manmukh’ is self-willed. He has decided to ignore The Guru. And
somehow he is leading his own way, driven by self. All of us consider it sign
of confidence and courage. It is believed that such individual has ability to control
circumstances. Well, this sounds amazing but then a question comes to mind, why
such people cannot control one circumstance, one event called ‘Death’?
Well, Guruji has clearly said that ‘Manmukh’ is influenced by ‘Duality’
and that leads them to ‘Death’. Guruji further says
following:
(The
blind, self-willed
manmukhs do not even think of the Lord; they are drowned to death
without water.)
(The
blind, foolish, self-willed
manmukh is not aware of this; death is hovering over his head.)
(Without
the Name, the blind, foolish, self-willed manmukh is under Death's power.)
(Without the Name, the self-willed manmukhs go to the City of Death.)
An
individual driven by him becomes blind. Like a blind he could not comprehend
anything else except himself. Such behavior signifies foolishness. And what is
his fate? Guruji says he drowns without water. To drown in ‘Chullu
Bhar Paani – Handful of water’ is considered shameful so what about drowning
without water, that has to be bigger shame. Guruji is making clear that life of
‘Manmukh’
is just shame and he is sure to meet his end in embarrassing way. Since he does
not listen to The Guru, it is obvious that he will be without ‘The
Naam’, as only Guru blesses with ‘The
Naam’. Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji
say further that ‘Manmukh’ dies a painful death, beaten up ‘Messenger of Death’, has
no respite anywhere, as he is buried in his ego does not understand the ‘Lord’s
Command’, in following words:
मनमुख मरहि अहंकारि मरणु विगाड़िआ ॥
(The
self-willed
manmukhs die in egotism-even their death is painfully ugly.)
(The
self-willed
manmukhs do not know the Lord's Command; they are beaten down by the
Messenger of
Death.)
(Those
self-willed
manmukhs are bound and gagged by Death, here and hereafter.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji calls life of ‘Manmukh’
as waste in following words:
मनमुख मरहि मरि मरणु विगाड़हि ॥
(The
self-willed
manmukhs are dying; they are wasting away in death.)
‘Manmukh’
is deluded and always under shadow of ‘Death’ as said by Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in following words:
मनमुखि भूलै जम की काणि ॥
(The
self-willed
manmukhs are deluded, under the shadow of death.)
Guruji
further says following about ‘Manmukh’:
जमण मरणु विसारिआ मनमुख मुगधु गवारु ॥
(The
foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death.)
(The self-willed manmukhs are afflicted by death;
they cling to Maya in emotional attachment.)
It
is evident they are doomed. Dhan Shri Guru Ram Das Ji compares ‘Manmukh’
with pigeon in following words:
जिउ पंखी कपोति आपु बन्हाइआ मेरी जिंदुड़ीए तिउ मनमुख सभि वसि काले राम ॥
(Like
the pigeon, which itself falls into the trap, O my soul, all the self-willed
manmukhs fall under the influence of death.)
It
is commonly believed, Pigeon closes its eyes when predator pounces on it. Wise
people say that pigeon does that under impression, if it does not see the
predator then predator won’t see it. But that is misconception at its part. Similarly
a ‘Manmukh’
engaged in all the futile actions believes ‘Death’ will not touch him
but he fells into trap of ‘false thoughts’ just to be perished
in hands of ‘Death’.
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji strikes deeper into ‘Manmukh’
way of worshipping in following words:
नानक संधिआ करै मनमुखी जीउ न टिकै मरि जमै होइ खुआरु ॥१॥
(O
Nanak, the self-willed
manmukh may recite his evening prayers, but his mind is not centered
on it; through
birth and death, he is ruined.)
‘Manmukh’
is so self-centered that even while performing prayers, he is not focused. What
kind of life is that? His actions are just superficial. And what happens, well
he will be ruined and will fall in cycle of births and deaths.
