2. Without ‘The Guru’:
‘Guru’
leads to ‘God’. And if an individual is not with ‘Guru’ he is surely bound
to suffer. Not having Guru is not enough to say that an individual is ‘Without
Guru’ or ‘Away from Guru’. An individual’s action can also suggest that
he is ‘Without Guru’ or ‘Away from Guru’. Thus, it is
important to understand what actions described by Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
suggest that an individual is ‘Without Guru’ or ‘Away
from Guru’.
Dhan Shri Guru Arjan
Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Ram Das Ji describe ‘
- not serving’
as an such action in following words:
पूरा सतिगुरु कबहूं न सेविआ सिरि ठाढे जम जंदारा ॥
(They
never serve the
Perfect True Guru, and the cruel tyrant Death stands over their heads.)
(O
Nanak, without
serving the True Guru, they are bound and gagged, and beaten in the
City of Death;
they depart with blackened faces.)
The point to be
noted, serving ‘The Perfect True Guru’ can only save an individual from ‘Death’.
If an individual is in grip of ‘Fear of Death’ even when he is
serving ‘someone’ then he is just serving an ‘impostor’. Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes ‘ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ – without meeting The Guru’ in following words:
बिनु गुर भेटे जमु करे खुआरा ॥३॥
(Without
meeting the Guru,
they are tortured by Death.)
Well, Guruji
has provided His experience. He roamed in holy cities but when
someone called Him ‘Nirgura – One Without Guru’ then He
searched for ‘True Guru’. Only after meeting with Dhan Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji,
His
search stopped. And what happened later everyone is aware of it. Dhan Shri Guru
Ram Das Ji describes ‘ਵਿਛੁੜਿ – separation’ as another action in following words:
कोई विछुड़ि जाइ सतिगुरू पासहु तिसु काला मुहु जमि मारिआ ॥
(If
someone separates
himself from the
True Guru, his face is blackened, and he is destroyed by the Messenger of Death.)
Mortals
are hurt, feel the pain when near or dear one leaves or dies since they are
separated ‘Physically’. If the attachment is at deeper level i.e. at
emotional level then enduring such pain is even hard. But what happens when they
are separted from ‘The Guru’. Very few feel the pain since the mind and heart has
neven considered ‘The Guru’ as the near or dear one. So what ever is done for ‘The
Guru’ is just a superficial action without surrender and dedication!
And where devotion lacks, the separation is bound to happen even if ‘The
Guru’ is in physical vicinity. Then such individuals walk away from Guru
which Dhan Shri Guru Ram Das Ji as described another action ‘ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਚਲਹਿ
- more they walk
away’ in following words:
जिउ जिउ चलहि चुभै दुखु पावहि जमकालु सहहि सिरि डंडा हे ॥२॥
(The
more they walk
away, the deeper it pierces them, and the more they suffer in pain,
until finally, the Messenger of Death smashes his club against their
heads.)
Separation can
be ‘Will
of Guru’ or He may have asked His follower to stay few days away
from Him.
Like Dhan
Shri Guru Angad Dev Ji asked Bhai Amar Das Ji to move to Goindwal
and specifically instructed not to visit Him (Guruji) frequently. Yes,
this was physical separation but the mind and heart of Bhai Amar Das always
stayed attuned at His Guru’s Feet. But Guru never asks anyone to walk away
from Him.
Walking away from ‘The Guru’ is intentional. It signifies that all the bonds
between Guru and follower have broken. It signifies separation, both at
physical and spiritual level. And when that happens, the follower does not
accept Guru’s Teaching, another action ‘ਨਾਹੀ ਮਤਿ – not accept’ by Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
in following words:
(Whoever
does not accept
the Guru's Teachings, and does not dwell upon the Lord's Name, is
bound and bagged, and dragged into the City of Death.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Ram Das Ji also emphasizes on obtaining the Blessed
Vision and Association of True Guru. If an individual fails to
do that it is also considered as an action of being without Guru.
Guruji
describes it as ‘ਨ ਪਾਇਆ – not obtained’ in following words:
जिन दरसनु सतिगुर सत पुरख न पाइआ ते भागहीण जमि मारे ॥
(Those
who do not
obtain the Blessed Vision of the Darshan of the True Guru, the True
Primal Being, are most unfortunate; they are destroyed by the Messenger of Death.)
(One
who does not
obtain the Association of the True Guru, is a most unfortunate
sinner; he is consumed by the Messenger of Death.)
So
what happens to an individual ‘Without True Guru’? Gurbaani
says following:
(Without the Guru,
all are unconscious;
they are held in bondage by the Messenger of Death.)
(Without the Perfect
Guru, births and deaths do not cease, and one comes and goes, over
and over again.)
(The
world suffers the pains of death and rebirth, and through the love of duality,
it is ruined; without
the Guru, the essence of reality is not known.)
(Without the True
Guru, the faithless cynics rot
away and die. The noose of Death is around the necks of those who have no
guru.)
(Without the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain.
Seized by Death,
they weep and wail.)
‘Without Guru’ every
individual is living in dormant state. And ‘Death’ is keeping in its
grip. He does not stop dying and just keep coming and going. The ‘Death’
gives him pain and duality does not leave him. He behaves like faithless cynic
and ‘Death’
always holds him with his neck. He is seized by ‘Death’; he suffers, weeps
and wails in terrible pain.
