6. Maya: Anything
which is manifestation of ‘The One’ is Maya. And the reason for Maya
is Duality.
Maya
is well known concept to Indians that is Indian understands what classify as Maya
but unfortunately diminishing values has made the understanding ‘null’.
Now, Maya
is just a word, to find excused for wrong practices, to find out an escape
route in the world but will that really help? Will it really salvage? As per Gurbaani
no matter what an individual does using Maya as reason, like calling even Maya
as creation of ‘The One’ so how being entangled in it can be bad, is surely heading
on ‘Path
to Dying Again and Again’. As per Trilochan Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji,
Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji:
(The
mind is totally attached to Maya; the mortal has forgotten his fear of old age
and death.)
(But if they are emotionally attached to Maya,
then the Messenger
of Death shall hunt them down.)
(They
do not see the Messenger
of Death; they long for Maya, and their consciousness is attached to greed.)
(Greed, worldly
entanglements and Maya deceive the
world. Death
hovers over its head, and causes it to weep.)
(They
are afflicted with the diseases of egotism and Maya, and they suffer the pains of death
and rebirth.)
Mind
has been wrongly attached to ‘The Greed – Maya’, entrapped in ‘Wordly
– Entanglements – Maya’, practices ‘Egotism – Maya’ and under
its influence an individual does not remember advent of old age and Death.
There is no dearth of such people. They will keep doing ‘forbidden actions’ and
will justify saying ‘It is my life and I will not get it again,
so I want to live, who knows I will live another moment to enjoy it’. Yes,
life is uncertain, live it, but at what cost? They do realize if they happen to
live more than who will secure the old age, who will secure the Death.
And once they are stuck, they struggle to get out some will just end up may be committing
suicide. That is just waste of life which they wanted to live with fun.
Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji says following:
(The
mortal being does not know how to chant Your Name - he is intoxicated with the wine of Maya,
and the thought of death does not even enter his mind.)
Maya
is intoxication and it is compared with ‘wine’. Ill effects of wine are known. It impacts ability of an individual to think. An individual under it's influence cannot perform simple task. Similarly an individual under Maya's influence loses the grip on 'Tge Real Truth'. Guruji has given analogy of wine since Maya is latent. What else does the analogy Wine - Maya suggests? It suggests
that ‘consuming wine or alcohol’ is forbidden in ‘Gurbaani’.
Those who engage in drinking are surely not listening to Guru, are under influence of Maya and surely heading
to their doom.
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
are warning such people, engrossed in Maya, to give up emotional attachment
to Maya
else Death
will hunt and beat them down in following words:
माइआ मोहि विसारिआ सचु मरणा हरि नामु ॥
(Emotionally
attached to Maya,
the mortal forgets truth, death and the Name of the Lord.)
(Because
of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.)
(Attached
to Maya,
you will be beaten by Death's heavy club.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Raam Das Ji also gives insight related to plight of
such people in following words:
पचि पचि मुए बिखु देखि पतंगा ॥३॥
(They
burn away to death,
chasing the poison of Maya, like the moth chasing the flame.)
Death
of a Moth, burning while chasing flame has inspired many poets and many have depicted
it as ‘Love’. They have given it emotions, that moth does not give up
flame though he is aware of its end. But as per Guruji it is foolishness
and complete wrong projection, infact moth is deluded to its death. Well the
choice is of mortals, do we listen to words originating from ‘Imortality’
or give importance of words originated from incomplete, faulty comprehension of
surely fallible mortality.
An
individual should pray to be saved from Maya, because it is cause of Death,
as said by Naam Dev Ji in following words:
आला ते निवारणा जम कारणा ॥३॥४॥
(O
Lord, please save me from Maya, the cause of death.)
Why
an individual should be away from Maya is answered by Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji:
जीवतिआ अथवा मुइआ किछु कामि न आवै ॥
(In
life and in death,
this Maya
is of no use.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji clearly tells what Maya
has to offer in following words:
माइआ महि कालु अरु पंच दूता ॥३॥
(Death
and the five
demons are in Maya.)
Well,
Greed,
Egotism,
Wordly
Entanglements, Lust and Anger are demons of Maya.
And ofcourse they all are leading an individual to his death.
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji also calls Maya as possessor of three
qualities in following words:
एह त्रिगुण माइआ जिनि जगतु भुलाइआ जनम मरण का सहसा ॥
(This three-phased Maya has deluded the whole world
into cynicism about death and birth.)
What
are these ‘Three Qualities’? Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji answers
in following words:
(He has no form, no shape, no color; God is beyond the three qualities.)
And
what happens to people who are living in these three qualities is described by Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in
following words:
(One
who loves the three
qualities is subject to birth and death.)
(Those who are
controlled by the three qualities have death hovering over their heads.)
