‘False Actions’ what are they? A simple
understanding is actions which take an individual away from ‘Truth’
are ‘False
Actions’. Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji blesses us with ‘His
Grace’ to comprehend, understand and know the ‘False Actions’ to live a
better life; a life, which will have less pain both at the beginning and end; a
life which will lead every individual to achieve ‘The Ultimate Goal – Union with
The One’. The need is to overcome and negate the temptations, pleasure
so that ‘Death – which causes the unbearable pain’ should not touch an
individual. Upcoming section is focused on ‘False Actions’ as per Dhan
Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The ‘False Actions’ will be classified as
per their nature.
1.
Without ‘The Naam’:
There are many actions as per ‘Gurbaani’ which signify an
individual being without ‘The Naam’. We will look at them one
by one.
Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das
Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describe
‘ਪਾਇਆ - not
obtained’ as one of such actions in
following words:
(Those
who have not
obtained the Sublime Essence of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, are
most unfortunate; they are led away by the Messenger of Death.)
(They
do not obtain
the Lord's Name,
and they waste away their lives in vain; O Nanak, the Messenger of Death
punishes and dishonors them.)
Guruji
has declared them unfortunate who have ‘not obtain’ ‘The Naam’. Why? Because they may
have tried to change their destiny but could not obtain ‘The Naam’ and at the end they
just suffered in hands of ‘Messenger of Death’. But there are
few who do this intentionally and for them Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji have used the action ‘
Forget’
in following words:
(Forgetting the Naam,
you shall have to endure the pain of death.)
(Forgetting the Name,
they shall endure the pain of death.)
(Those
who forget
the Lord die, but they cannot die a complete death.)
(Forgetting the Naam,
these are the stigmas which stick to him; the Messenger of Death beats him, and drags him to hell.)
Guruji
saying firmly, that forgetting ‘The Naam’ is not an option. It
should not be even use as an excuse. If an individual forgets he is heading to
painful ‘Death’. Also, in above shabads, Guruji has made reference
to ‘Complete
Death’. Generally when someone dies we refer to words ‘Poora
Ho Gaya’ which refers to his death but if translated it means ‘he is
complete’. But as per Guruji, not every man’s death makes
him complete. Does this mean the death encountered in cycle of death (life
-> death -> life -> death) is not complete? Well this is not topic of
this discussion but one thing that comes to mind ‘Death’ of an individual
is just an end to cycle but not to the ‘complete cycle’. So what does not
end with such ‘Death’? Passions, desires they don’t end hence the cycle is
incomplete what ends is just a physical form.
Moving
forward, ‘ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਰਥਿ ਖਰਚਿ ਨਹ ਸਾਕਹਿ - not in harmony’
with ‘The Lord’ is another action which leads to ‘Death’. This has been
described by Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji in following words:
हरि कै अरथि खरचि नह साकहि जमकालु सहहि सिरि पीड़ा ॥२॥
(They
cannot spend this in harmony with the Lord, and so they must endure the
pain which the Messenger
of Death inflicts upon their heads.)
Above
words refer to wealth which faithless cynics have accumulated. They cannot be
in harmony in what ever do to. And that takes them far away from ‘The
Naam – The Lord’ and eventually they are chased by ‘Messengers
of Death’. Guruji also tell us ‘ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ - not contemplating’ on ‘The
Naam’ is another action which opens door to ‘Death’ in following
words:
(But
do not
contemplate the Lord, Har, Har - the Messenger of Death will seize them and take them away.)
An
individual is free to like and there are no scarcity of choices to be made. To
like someone or something suggest free will. But do mortals execute this choice
properly? Well, Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes another action ‘ਨ ਭਾਇਆ –
not Like’ which
just invites attack of ‘Messenger of Death’ in following
words:
(They
do not like the
Lord's Name, and they lose their life uselessly. O Nanak, the Messenger of Death attacks them, and humiliates them.)
Forgetting
can be non-intentional as an individual is occupied with his worldly duty. But
not remembering is surely intentional. And Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describe ‘ਨ ਆਵੈ ਚਿਤਿ – not remember’ as another action which results in punishment
by ‘Messenger
of Death’ in following words:
जिसु खसमु न आवै चिति तिसु जमु डंडु दे ॥
(One
who does not
remember his Lord and Master, is punished by the Messenger of Death.)
(He
does not
remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he is bound and gagged by
the Messenger of
Death.)
Separation
from lord also causes terrible pain. Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes ‘ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ
– separation’
as another action which lands an individual at ‘Death’s Door’ in
following words:
(Those
who are separated,
do not meet with the Lord; they suffer in terrible pain at Death's Door.)
‘Not
Medidating’ is another action which ensures that individual does not
escape from 'Death'. Kabeer Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji describe ‘ਨ ਜਪਹੁ - ਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ – Not Meditating’
as fallout in following words:
राम न जपहु कवन भ्रम भूले तुम ते कालु न दूरे ॥
(You
do not meditate
on the Lord.
What doubts have confused and deluded you? Death is not far away from you!)
(He
does not
meditate in remembrance on the Lord, even for an instant, and so the Messenger of Death
makes him suffer.)
All
the actions covered above hints that an individual is away from ‘Lord’.
He is without ‘The Naam’. And Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Dhan
Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji stress that ‘without’ ‘The Naam’ an individual
cannot escape ‘Death’ in following words:
बिनु नावै बाधी सभ कालि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥
(Without the Name,
all are held in the grip of Death.)
(Without the Naam,
cursed is the body, which shall be taken back by Death.)
Without ‘The Naam’ everything is cursed and is
subjected to its end. ‘Death’ will keep him in its grip
