Duality: Duality
is word often used in Science and Spirituality. In terms of Science ‘The
Duality’ is best explained by nature of ‘Photon – The Particles with which
Light is made of’. Experiments have shown that Photon behaves as both particle
(This was established by Photoelectric Affect) and wave (This was
established by Interference). A basic particle of universe exhibits ‘Dual
Nature’. Thus it makes sense that we humans, composed of such infinite
particles will surely be affected by ‘Duality’. But well before science
established Duality by experiments, the spirituality has already exposed ‘Duality’.
And such references are found in ‘Gurbaani’. As per ‘Gurbaani’,
‘Duality’
means ‘Many’. ‘Gurbaani’ emphasizes on ‘One
Lord – The Formless’ and everything we observe or comprehend is HIS
manifestation. So, if an individual is lost in manifestations and does
not remember or forgets ‘The One’, he is considered to be in ‘Grip
of Duality’ as per ‘Gurbaani’. So in this section we
will look at what ‘Duality’ does to individuals that they head towards pain ‘Death’.
Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Raam Das Ji say following:
(Because
of their love of
duality, they suffer in pain. The Messenger of Death is watching all.)
(In
the love of
duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the
self-willed manmukhs.)
‘Duality’
offers pain and suffering. And ‘Death’ has eyes fixed on people
caught in ‘Duality’. ‘Anekta – Many, Duality’ may look
pleasing to mind and heart. It may seem to be doing wonders and taking away
pains. But that is just transient and if an individual fails to recognize the
source ‘The One’ behind ‘many’ he will just wither away in
pain in the end. And ‘Death’ will not miss out on them.
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji gives insight into another affect
of ‘Duality’
in following words:
(Attached
to duality,
the world is distracted and distressed to death.)
‘Duality’
is distraction. How? With so ‘many manifestations’ an individual
does not know which ‘image’ to follow. Yes, every
manifestation is image of ‘The One’. The focus is lost when
many is chased. A simple example is while defining career of child parents want
to focus on only one option. Since they know better results can be expected if
the focus is only on one. But we forget this simple rule when it comes to
choosing spiritual option. So, what happens next? With distraction no focus the
possibility of success decreases. And that results in distress, a welcome sign
for ‘Death’
to play its role. Without success an individual is ruined and ‘Death’
awaits him. Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji
describe it in following words:
दुयै भाइ विगुचीऐ गलि पईसु जम की फास ॥
(In
the love of
duality, the soul-bride is ruined; around her neck she wears the noose of Death.)
(The
love of duality
and doubts have ruined
the self-willed manmukh, who is lured away by the Messenger of Death.)
An
individual struggle is all about ‘honor’ in the world. He just longs that where
ever he goes people appreciate him, honor him. But in grip of ‘Duality’,
‘Death’ which is hovering over his head ensures he loosed his honor. Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji describes it in following words:
जमकालु सदा है सिर ऊपरि दूजै भाइ पति खोई ॥२॥
(The Messenger of Death is always hovering above their
heads. In the love
of duality, they lose their honor.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji say following:
(He
may put this off today, but tomorrow he is seized by death; in love with duality,
he practices corruption.)
‘Duality’
makes an individual to practice corruption. How? In grip of ‘Duality’
a mortal is deluded that everything belongs to him. And he drives everything.
He wants everyone to believe it and can go to any limit to gratify and satisfy
himself. He steals; he lies and hits the rock bottom of his character.
Eventually ‘Death’ grabs him gleefully in ‘Its’ lap. Such individual
reaches the pinnacle of egotism. He behaves like faithless cynic (as Duality
makes him abandone ‘The Naam’) and yes ‘Death’ strangles him as described by
Dhan
Shri Guru Ram Das Ji describes it in following words:
मेरे मन नाम बिना जो दूजै लागे ते साकत नर जमि घुटीऐ ॥
(O
my mind, without
the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and attached to duality, those faithless cynics are strangled by the Messenger of Death.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji gives insight into another form of
‘Duality’
in following words:
(He keeps the company of both virtue and vice, tormented by hunger
and the Messenger
of Death.)
A
human mind stuck between Vice and Virtue is under influence
of ‘Duality’.
This sounds strange, simply because if an individual knows about vices and
virtues ‘Death’ should not touch him. Well, just knowing about them does
not help. It is about practicing virtues and negating vices. But ‘Duality’
does not allow it to happen. Individual keeps denying it that he is under
influence of it. Well it is human nature to negate the very thought, that ‘I’
am bounded by ‘Duality’? When an individual ignores the thought of ‘Death’
which is apparent to everyone, then how can he accepts the ‘Duality’
which is ‘latent’. Well, Dhan Shri Guru Amar Das Ji clearly
conveys everyone that whole world is under influence of ‘Death’ and bounded in ‘Love
of Duality’ in following words:
सभु जगु कालै वसि है बाधा दूजै भाइ ॥
(The
whole world is under the power of Death, bound by the love of duality.)
Dhan
Shri Guru Amar Das Ji gives further insight into plight
of mortals who are living in ‘Duality’ in following words:
दूजै भाइ बाधा जम फासी ॥
(In
the love of
duality, they are caught by the noose of the Messenger of Death.)
(In the love of duality, the mortals are caught
in the noose of the Messenger of Death.)
(The
noose of death
around his neck will never be untied; in the love of duality, he wanders in reincarnation.)
Well,
we can find excuse that escaping the ‘Duality’ may not be possible since
it is very nature of matter we are made of. This clearly shows the unwillingness
to put effort, efforts to align to ‘The Naam’ and to ‘The
Guru’. And surely such excuses and unwillingness are taking an individual to painful 'Death'.
